Exercise antagonism

I'm sure all of you know about exercise antagonism.   However, for those of you who are unaware of this supposed phenomenon I'll enlighten you.  In the past it was proposed by work out specialists that preforming both aerobic and weighted workouts in the same day made both less effective then if preformed on separate days.  One of my friends had informed me of this years ago and he sounded certain about the counteractive effects of duel workouts.  However, studies in both Sweden and Canada have found otherwise.  Both studies found that when doing both aerobic and weighted workouts in the same day there are no adverse effects, no decreased muscle growth or endurance depletion.  In fact it is proposed that doing both types together can be more effective then doing just the singular for the same amount of time.  For more information go to studies(1) or study (2).

  1. It does make sense that working out harder (aerobic and weights, rather than just one0 would improve the effectiveness of a workout. The studies that you attached could definitely help people trying to stay fit and healthy. I had never heard of exercise antagonism, but that idea interests me. I wonder if there are any studies which favor exercise antagonism?

  2. I thought this was interesting. I always thought weight lifting and cardio were better when you did them on the same day, which is why things like cross fit exist. They would be getting your heart rate up and strengthening your muscles at the same time. It just makes biological sense to me that it would be healthy to do both on the same day.
